From slavery to street parties: A history of the Notting Hill Carnival

From slavery to street parties: A history of the Notting Hill Carnival
Every August bank holiday the streets of West London come alive in a truly carnival manner. The usually smoggy city air is drenched in the smell of sticky jerk chicken, and a sea of electric, carnival costumes appears around every corner. Parades march their way down the roads of Notting Hill, followed by a mass of wild fans that bop along to their steel drums and the ‘wob wob wob’ of epic sound-systems. This is Notting Hill Carnival, and it’s attended by around two million people every year. The annual event, which has been named Europe’s biggest street party, is steeped in a fascinating history – one of nationalities and cultures coming together at a time of crisis in post-war Britain.
