Toast of the Town – A snapshot of Glasgow

With the 20th Commonwealth Games starting in Glasgow next week (opening ceremony on 23rd July 2014), there is no better time to celebrate all that's Glaswegian.

The Millennium Hotel in Glasgow are excited to get stuck into the sporting atmosphere, with many thousands estimated to make their way to the city to take in the sights.

In honour of this, on Saturday 12th July the Millennium Hotel Glasgow opened its doors and played host to the Toast of the Town 'Sense of Sight' photography event. Along with photographer Stuart Dreghorn, 27 bloggers from Glasgow and Edinburgh joined for an instructional workshop on how to capture those magical moments. Almost everyone loves to take photos, from a beautiful landscape on holiday, to capturing moments of special events and even the infamous selfie - photos are part of our everyday lives.

Capturing a snapshot takes little knowledge, but learning how to really master light, shutter speed and composition comes with practice. We invited photography enthusiasts to come to our master class and pick up a few tips in lieu of this summer's sporting event.

The day would not be complete without some good Scottish fare, and the attendees enjoyed a feast of Haggis Bon Bon's, Scottish Hot Dogs (Venison Sausages served with a rustic bun), Mini Haggis and Steak Burgers, Salmon Bites (served with sesame seed and panko crust and a lemon dill mayonnaise). For dessert they were served Mini Cranachan Towers - a traditional Scottish dessert of summer raspberries folded into cream, flavoured with honey, and toasted oatmeal soaked in whiskey.

After lunch the bloggers put their new found knowledge into practice, and headed out to George Square in the city of Glasgow. With prominent buildings, statues and monuments, this historical development is an ideal place to get snapping. Everyone took this in their stride, capturing their favourite Glasgow sights. Afterwards, bloggers were invited to take part in a competition to see who could capture the 'Best Instagram picture' and who could comprise the 'Best Tweet'. The lucky winners were:

- Miss West End Girl @misswestendgirl (Best Tweet)

"The best photo challenges are the ones that end in tea and scones! Thanks for an awesome day."

- Michelle Muirhead @ananyah (Best Instagram Picture)

At the end of the day, the bloggers enjoyed a spot of afternoon tea whilst they shared their photographs. With Glasgow's rich heritage and culture, there was plenty to talk about over tea.

Nayan Peshkar, VP Revenue Management and Ecommerce, at Millennium & Copthorne Hotels speaking on behalf of Millennium Hotel Glasgow concluded:

"It's great to be able to host events such as this here in Glasgow. Not only is it a great opportunity to showcase the city, but it also allows us to give back to the community at a time when the limelight's on Glasgow. We hope the bloggers can put their photography tips to good use and capture the Commonwealth Games in all their glory."
